Spilled the Beans

"You know that extra skin around your tummy? My mom had to get that removed."

This quote comes from a colleague's classroom. I'm sure mom is thrilled that her son told his teacher about her tummy tuck.

Political Posturing

"Mrs. Loudvoice? I just want to let you know that I will do ANYTHING to be Student of the Week."

This little guy is so cute and so naughty. He really is lovable in his own way but some days I just don't know what to do with him. He moved from another class to mine in January and he hasn't had a chance to be Student of the Week yet in either class. The rule in my class is that you can't move your clip for a whole week if you want to be SOTW. I reminded him of this and he said, "okay, will do" as he was walking out to be picked up for an appointment.

I think this is going to be a good week since he will be working very hard to be SOTW!

Lost and Found

"Finders keepers, losers SWEEPERS"

In a conversation about lost and found a boy revealed that people who lose their coats should also be forced to sweep the floor.

Ladybugs and Gentlemen

"Are all ladybugs girls?"

We were on our walking field trip and one of the boys came back to where I was to ask this question. I told him every species has boys and girls so that means some ladybugs are boys. He looked confused but accepted the answer and went back to his partner.

Judge and Jury

"Are aliens real?!?"

Three boys were eagerly awaiting my answer. Note to self...get rid of the DK book on "Alien Invaders".

One of the most important aspects of my job is being the ultimate authority on all issues. Anytime they have an argument about anything they run to me to settle it. I have settled arguments on tanks, high school, cars, dogs and a few other things.

The Dangers of Helping

"I heard the toilet flush so I thought it would be nice to open the door for him."

This little guy LIVES to help but only yesterday learned help in the bathroom is usually frowned upon. The unfortunate thing is this incident involved an older child and therefore a teacher in an older grade who doesn't understand my kiddo's perfectly legitimate explanation so my kiddo was assigned a detention for this faux pas. :(

Party Pooper

"I understand if you can't come, it would just be really special if you did."

Most flattering birthday party invitation EVER! I swear, the boys in my class are just so nice. I ended up having Strep the day of the party so I couldn't go but I would have liked to go just to see what happened.

Twice a Week?

"What's this extra button for anyway?"

Teaching 1st grade gives me the opportunity to teach important life lessons kids haven't had a chance to learn yet.

Case in point...
One boy in my class comes to school AT LEAST twice a week with his shirt buttoned wrong. He starts with the spare button on the inside of the placket and goes up. One time I was helping him fix it and ended up with a crowd around me. One of the cutie cupcakes in the gang asked the above question but I just could not convince them to ignore the button.

Thanks for Noticing

"Mrs. Loudvoice, you wear different earrings everyday. My mom wears the same ones everyday but I think it looks nice to wear different ones."

This from a 6 year old BOY. I couldn't come up with a response so I said, "thanks for noticing." I made a New Year's resolution to wear earrings everyday, I guess my public is responding.
